About Matcha

What is Matcha?

Matcha is green tea leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant that have been stone ground to a fine powder. When producing Matcha, the plants are shaded from the sun 3 weeks prior to harvest. This allows the leaves to turn a deep shade of green and increase the production of nutrients like chlorophyll and amino acids. When the leaves are ready, they are carefully selected, steamed, and laid out to dry. The stems and the veins from the leaves are then removed before being stone milled into the fine bright green powder we call Matcha.

History of Matcha

Matcha has been around for over 1000 years. It originated in China during the Tang Dynasty where green tea leaves were steamed and dried into bricks for easy storage and trade. The tea was prepared by roasting and pounding into a powder and mixing with hot water. In the 1100s, a Japanese Zen Monk introduced the practice of powdered tea to Japan. The monks found Matcha useful in staying calm and alert during many hours of meditation. In the 14th and 15th  centuries, Matcha became the drink for Samurais, Japanese royalty and the upper class. Matcha has maintained its popularity in Japan throughout the years. The Uji region in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan is known for being the largest and finest tea producing regions in the country.
